Opinion-based Theology: A House of Straw

Every American child was taught the nursery story about the three little pigs that each built houses of different materials. These modern day parables have biblical parallels such as a man who builds his house on the sand (Mt 7:26). One thing that has crept into Christian thinking is the notion of opinion-based theology. Opinion-based theology disdains people having or showing any expression of certainty or surety, in spite of the fact that Heb 11:1 tells us that faith is exactly the point of being SURE & CERTAIN.

If I am going to have a theological conversation with someone, I want to know that he or she REALLY believes what it is they are saying. If I spend lots of time in a conversation just to find out the person thinks all things are relative & we're just "sharing our opinions" I feel like I have been robbed of my time.

But there are some people that will send out these little barbs, saying that anyone who staunchly believes something is merely "closed-minded" or "polemic", but then it seems these same people appear to drop out of REAL discussions & instead retreat to some wooded fortress in the middle of nowhere & into a house made of straw. Here, they feel comfortable...in their fake world... a world that is unlike the reality in which most people inhabit. How then do they assume to be able to communicate when they have disconnected from reality? Further, these same people who like to sit around & merely share opinions claim it is "disrespectful" if you treat their opinions in low regard.

Look, I'm here in creation to build a defintive & definite relationship with the Creator. I am here to seek out His character, His nature & His will. I'm not here to sit around like some coffee shop yuppie talking & talking about nothing with no conclusion. If our theology merely comes down to our "opinions" then what's the point? No wonder many of the elitist types end up becoming functional atheists. The older I get, the less impressed I am with the concept of "finding something new" in theology -- Ecclesiastes 1:9 truer now in a relative-minded world more than ever. So let the elitists drop out of reality.

Let them go to their compounds of disconnect. Let them build houses of straw & think they are on the higher plane. The Bible is still true & God is still on his Throne as He ever was & will be. Amen & Amen.
