2012 Presidential Debate #1 Review

As many Americans and people around the world, I too tuned into the first 2012 presidential debate on October 3, 2012.

Barack Obama faced off with Mitt Romney in what is being presented as an election that may very well decide the course of a nation; not just in the short term but perhaps fundamentally.

Most post-commentaries, from both sides of the political spectrum admitted that Romney came out the winner; if a debate can have a winner. I agree that Romney clearly did a better job at presentation and at addressing the issues but there are a few things I wish Romney would have addressed.

HEALTH CARE

Obama and the Democrats often talk about insuring people with pre-existing conditions and how inhumane it is for insurance companies to ever deny coverage. First, can you imagine how this would work in other forms of insurance? How about auto insurance? Should an auto insurance company be forced to insure a person with multiple wrecks on their record or worse yet, with DUIs or other driving issues? But even further, Romney continued to try to point out that "Obamacare" will have an unelected board that will decide what level of care people can ultimately have. Obama tried to claim the board would merely look for ways to make care more efficient.

Here's what I wish Romney would have seized upon. Let us grant for a moment that Obamacare will cover people with pre-existing conditions and never turn anyone away no matter how poor their health. Let's say there is an 87 year old with chronic health issues, that could be cured at an exorbitant price. Is Obama really trying to make us believe that his un-elected board will have nothing to do with determining if the care should be given? Is Obama really trying to make us believe that there is an endless coffer of health care money that will deal with these kinds of issues but at a million fold, instead of an individual example? Where does Obama think this money will come from or will he force doctors to work on people for no fee at all?

ROLE OF GOVERNMENT

When the candidates were asked the main role of government, even Obama stated it was the defense of the American people. Perhaps some people may have thought it a cheap shot but I wished Romney would have said something to the effect, that he too believes the main role of the government is the defense of the American people...including those serving in our embassies in Libya and Egypt. Having unarmed guards at our embassies or allowing the host country to guard our interests is just bad policy...especially when those host countries are already hostile.

CONCLUSION

My hope is that we can stem the tide of anti-American ideology that has been overtaking our government and culture. There IS an American Ideology, and I'd like to see THAT discussed more than which party is best for America.
