Speak My Language

Whether it is when we talk about sports, politics, theology or any other topic, we use a specific language, or words that are specific to the topic. For instance, in American football, there are words like touchback, downs, yardage which have specific meaning.

In a Bible Study at my home on July 6, 2012; our group talked about the language of theology and what it means. For example, we addressed three words:

  1. Eisegetics - In (to/of)
  2. Exegetics - Out (to/of)
  3. Apologetics - Defense (to/of)

These theological words were discussed in how we approach the Bible. As you can see, each word is a compound word, made up of two parts. Eise = IN, Exe = OUT, and Apolo = DEFENSE and Getic = TO/OF.

Our group discussed how we don't want to read into the Bible. We don't want to approach the Bible eisegetically. We don't want to read our own emotions or situations into the Bible. Rather, we want to read it exegetically; pulling out the Bible its overall themes and lessons. Eventually, once we have a good understanding of what the Bible is trying to present on any given subject; we then want to perform apologetics or a defense of what the Bible is saying.

With this approach, our group hopes to be able to gain the most from God's Word without corrupting our reception of it with our own spin...intentional or otherwise.
