Evidences Series Introduction

EvidencesIn the late 1970s through the 1980s, Josh McDowell wrote and published a two volume series called "Evidence That Demand A Verdict".  These books have been a great apologetic source for me and I encourage any serious student of the Bible to secure these books. As a Reformed Christian I understand and advocate a presuppositionalist approach, which is that God must be the initiator of "knowledge" of Him. (Proverbs 1:7, John 6:64-65, Matthew 16:17) Whereas a purely empirical approach has humanity figuring out God by "evidences" and experiences. There is certainly a balance between these approaches, since the Bible in many places such as the verses referenced above does seem to be saying God must iniate knowledge of Him, let alone our ultimate salvation.  And yet there are places where the Bible advocates an empirical approach; such as in Romans 1:20 where it seems all of humanity has a base awareness of "god" and in verses like John 20:25-27 where Jesus encourages Thomas to assuage his doubts by empirically testing the post-resurrection Jesus' claims to be the same Jesus that was crucified on the Cross.

In the year 2010, I will be doing a lot of writing about the historic Christian Faith -- this is the Christianity that has held united beliefs for 2000 years, regardless of creedal, confessional, or denominational lines. I am NOT trying to be an "ecumenicist" in the sense I've seen some use that label, which seems more to be a syncretist -- trying to reconcile all things.  I want to bring out the essentials of the historic Christian Faith, be it in soteriologyi, ecclesiology, eschatology or any of the other "ologies".

So, what I plan to do periodically throughout the year 2010 is to write articles utilizing the Evidences volumes by McDowell as a backdrop.  The articles will not be in any specific order but can be found in the Evidences Series forum.
