Contending For the FaithNothing is more discouraging than betrayal and perhaps nothing more discouraging to Christians than betrayal by other Christians. Christians are supposed to CONTEND FOR THE FAITH...but not just any faith, since heretics like to redefine "faith", we must declare loudly, the rest of the verse:
It is the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. One thing all heresies have in common is that they are advocating some "new" faith, never practiced by the saints. One of the first things heretics do is try to get Christians to believe there was no unity in the Church, so then the heretic can insert his contrary doctrine into the mix (Romans 16:17-18). Unfortunately, many Christians blindly accept this infiltration all in the name of being "nice". The countless personal stories people have shared with me where some congregation's leadership is too weak to deal with heresy in the congregation but instead, like 1 Cor 5, the congregation is "proud" to tolerate heresy among them. Accounts where one congregation excommunicates heretics just to have them happily received by another supposed orthodox congregation. This discourages Christians and makes Christianity into a mere syncretic social club. Who wants to be part of that? No wonder so many young people want nothing to do with church and so many seniors stop attending. It becomes pointless. Who wants to join together every week to listen to mere opinions? Is the Gospel the truth or not? Are we really supposed to be contending for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints or are we just making it up as we go? Are we groping in the dark with a puzzle piece in hand hopeful that it fits somewhere? I'm just so sick of being betrayed by people who claim they are Christians.
