Another Hyperpreterist’s “Journey” Ends at Atheism

Hyperpreterism to AtheismHyperpreterism is the teaching that against all of historic Christian interpretation, that the Second coming of Jesus, the general resurrection of the believers, & the Judgment all occurred in AD70.  Hyperpreterism is often that last stop before the person finally takes the leap of unfaith into atheism.  I know at least 6-7 former hyperpreterists who have become functional atheists & now yet another man has come out & admitted he no longer believes in God.

Jared Coleman, who was a former administrator of the most vocal hyperpreterist website; “Planet Preterist” has come out & revealed:

Opposition does not equal advocacy

Todd Dennis, long time proponent of "full preterism" (rightly called "hyper-preterism" because it goes beyond biblical definition) has begun a new blog site where he plans to work on refuting the teaching he had embraced for over 13 years.  This is significant because Dennis is credited with being perhaps the "founder" of the online expression of full preterism.  Other hyper-preterist sites that now enjoy prominence actually directly lifted materials from Dennis' work...often without even crediting him.

One thing that Dennis points out on the new site is very important to note. Opposition does not equal advocacy.  What he means by this is, that while there have been many people that oppose hyper-preterism, there needs to be a better job done in advocating the correct position.

Postmillennialism or Preterism?: The Advancement of the Kingdom

Postmillennialism or PreterismDuring a recent “circle the wagons” conference where hyperpreterists got together to comfort one another that their movement isn’t collapsing but actually growing, Sam Frost gave a lecture called, “World Getting Better: A Biblical & Statistical Answer”. (source)

The speech was a classic proposition not for preterism but for postmillennialism yet Frost never really brings this out.  Frost being a studied man has to know that what he is preaching is actually postmillennialism yet throughout the speech he credits preterism.  This is the on-going tactic of hyperpreterists.  They will say such things as, “[full preterism] has been widely known & embraced in centuries past” (source)  It is a lie.

It does not require the lies & errors of hyperpreterism to see the “world getting better” – postmillennialism has been saying this for centuries.

The Messy Mathison Responses

Messy Mathison ResponsesIn 2004 a group of authors under the editorship of Keith Mathison published a book called When Shall These Things Be: A Reformed Response to Hyper-Preterism.  Since 2004 the “hyper-preterists” have had plans to respond to the response.  The original project was initiated by Edward Stevens of the International Preterist Association.  This project kept being delayed & delayed but the mess goes deeper.

Sam Frost, one of the original contributors to the “response to Mathison” project was eventually kicked off the project after a spat with Stevens concerning a debate Stevens & Frost had over Stevens’ first-century Rapture theory.

Then in late 2007, two other contributors to the project, Dave Green & Edward Hassert pulled their contributions citing frustration with the constant delays.  Green then formed another group to author a separate response.

Refuting Full (Hyper) Preterism

Refuting Hyper-preterismEven though I have made it clear that I am not going to use this site to be a site dedicated to “anti-preterism” (any more than it was ever decidicated to promoting preterism), I do want to highlight a few things that may interest people who find themselves either investigating the Full Preterist “movement” for the first time or for those who may be trying to escape that vicious anti-biblical culture.

First, I want to highlight the premiere contra Hyper-preterist website.  Before C. Jonathan Seraiah authored one of the first book length refutations of HP (The End of All Things) there was but one lone website taking on the whole of this malodorous movement.  That website is PreteristSite.com, run by Dee Dee Warren.  Hyper-preterists' hate her with a passion. And now with the recent trend toward “podcasting”, Warren has launched the battle into that audio domain as well.  Listen to her podcasting at PreteristPodcast.com.

Recently, there has been an exodus away from Hyper-preterism, both by “rank & file” & by some more well-knowns.  With this, has also come more contra Hyper-preterist websites, each focusing on different aspects.

The Truth About Preterism: A Full Disclosure By a Former Full Preterist

The Truth About PreterismDuring the beginning of groups such as the Muslims, Mormons, & Jehovah’s Witnesses there were people that were part of those groups that at some moment realized what a dismal lie those ideologies actually are.

From Islam there was Abdullah bin Ubayy who did all he could to stop Islam in its tracks.  From Mormonism there was Oliver Cowdery who actually said Joseph Smith Jr. (the founder of Mormonism) was the leader of a gang of "scoundrels of the deepest degree!".  From the Jehovah’s Witnesses there was Maria Ackley (the very wife of Charles Taze Russell – Russell founded the JWs) who divorced him after 18 years of marriage, alleging his on-going affairs with other women & his molestation of a young female house-border.

I am now feeling like one these people who at some pivotal moment in time realized they have been part of a bogus & destructive ideology.
