Are you wearing your “Jesus suit”?

A few years back there was a Christian catch phrase – “What would Jesus do?”wwjd

The phrase was supposed to prompt the hearer to think about what Jesus would do in any given situation.

But as Halloween has recently passed, I began to think of another analogy.  Based on Galatians 2:20“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” – it is Christ that lives and not we ourselves. What if we imagined ourselves wearing a “Jesus suit” everywhere we went.  I know it’s a bit hokey, but there is some truth to the concept.  How many times have you had someone watch your actions especially close because they knew you were a Christian?

Imagine yourself wearing a “Jesus suit” everywhere you went.  It would be like how kids think the dressed up Santa’s are the real Santa, but in this case, our actions REALLY DO represent Christ to those around us. If we were wearing this “Jesus suit” everywhere we went, would it change our actions?  Would we cuss that guy out for cutting us off on the highway? Would we huff and puff because the little old lady in the line in front of us is moving too slowly? Would we think of stealing, lying, cheating, coveting, lusting?

No, I am not trying to say there is a list of dos & don’ts  that we should keep in our pocket, but that as “new creatures”, as representatives of Christ the King, indeed as priests and kings, we would and should behave differently – by the very nature of who we are supposed to be. Not because we have a list of what is right & wrong.

It reminds me of a few years back when my wife and I were members of a small dispensational Baptist church.  One of the deacons admonished my wife for wearing a small crucifix on a chain.  He said, “We are Baptists, we see Christ as risen, not still on the cross”.  My wife’s response was great. “I’m a Christian and I wear this as a reminder that it should have been me on that cross”.

This little “Jesus suit” article is simply a reminder who we are supposed to be.  As Christians, we should not be threatening to sue other Christians.  We should not be trying to promote our ideas and ourselves.  We should not be trying to make a buck off of everything we say and do – especially regarding God. Rather, we ought to be as dead that Christ may live!
